"Resilience" by Ms. Niyati Lodha

There was a session organised by Ms. Niyati Lodha on “Resilience” by Rotaract Club – IITJ on 2nd August 2020.

What do you mean by Resilience?

Resilience is your ability to bounce back from a difficult situation. How easily can you get back to normal when you have had faced some difficult times in your life, that defines your Resilience.

Ms. Niyati Lodha explained that we should not give up on our circumstances. We must stop ourselves putting around situations. We should build up our strength at the mental level.

During the COVID times, being a Psychologist, she felt very disappointed as everywhere around we were hearing bad news about actors passing away, suicides happening and people are getting affected.

Physical and Mental Health are important to live a healthy life. So, she suggests that we should not watch web series till late at night and should stay away from negative news.

What is important in these tough situations is that we should accept the situation, till the time we don't get vaccinated, and even after we are vaccinated, we should learn to accept the situation the way it is. We need to understand that the situation is not under our control. We should have the acceptance that we will be fine. Since the situation is not under our control, so we can only be positive in our thoughts.

She says that between positive and negative, there is a fine line. That is of reality where you get your thoughts clear.

So, we need to be mindful. We need to wear masks and sanitizers.

Don't feed your mind with negative thoughts.

We need to identify our situation. She explained this with an example that if we are hungry then we become angry. Similarly, when you are sleepy, so you are irritating. So, we need to label our emotions in a better way.

Ms. Niyati suggests that whenever we are stuck in a situation, we need to see that situation as a third person and then solve the situation.

She gave a message to every person who has ever thought of suicide or has thought of quitting his life because of his inability to handle the circumstances. She said that your father has invested in you for so many years through education and you mother has invested in you through her love and care. You should think about them. You need to find a purpose in your life.

If you abuse yourself mentally, then due to stress, we get headache, stomach, vomiting and all sorts of physical ailments. Physical and mental health go hand in hand. You need to see, how to build resilience. You need to keep yourself away from social media when you know that it is not being a positive source in your life. Instead, you should keep yourself happy and do one such thing everyday that keeps you happy.

It is suggested that do not think this way that "Corona will happen to me". If you think this way, you are putting all sorts of negative thoughts in your mind. So, you are destroying your mental health and as a result of which your immunity becomes weak and you are affecting your physical health. So, in this way the chances of happening Corona increases. Instead, we should all think positively and focus on increasing our immunity and taking all safety precautions.

Whenever we have any confusion, we should go to a doctor and get all our thoughts and facts clean.
